Volvo Cars announced that it has begun production of the EX30 at its factory in Ghent, Belgium, to meet the demand for the small 100% electric SUV in the European market.
The arrival of the EX30 at Volvo’s Belgian assembly line marks another new chapter in the history of the Ghent factory, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and drives a reorganization of processes, including the construction of a new battery assembly building and the recruitment of an additional 350 employees.
To make the production of the EX30 in the Ghent factory possible, Volvo invested approximately €200 million in that production unit, which allowed for the inclusion of a new vehicle platform, the installation of nearly 600 new robots, the expansion of the battery hall, and the addition of a new production line for doors, as well as for battery assembly.
“The EX30 is a crucial model for us as we continue to strengthen our position in the premium electric car market in Europe. The investment in the European production of the EX30 in Ghent is perfectly aligned with our strategy of building our cars where they sell best,” said Francesca Gamboni, Chief Manufacturing & Supply Chain Officer at Volvo Cars.
In addition to the production of the EX30, Volvo also plans to start production of the new EX30 Cross Country at the Ghent factory by the end of the year.
