The United States automobile safety agency will lay off more than 25% of its employees through a voluntary separation incentive program offered by the government of Donald Trump.
According to data provided to the U.S. Congress, which “Reuters” had access to, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the Department of Transportation, is reducing its workforce from 772 to 555 by May 31. The Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration will also lose more than 25% of their employees.
It should be noted that President Donald Trump, since taking office in January, launched a campaign to reshape the federal civilian workforce of 2.3 million employees, led by billionaire Elon Musk and the Office of Government Efficiency.
By the end of April, about 100 days after the start of the effort, the government reform resulted in the dismissal, resignation, and early retirement of 260,000 public workers, according to data from “Reuters.”
Moreover, the layoffs now planned for the NHTSA come at a time when the agency is conducting a series of investigations into advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles involving Tesla, Alphabet’s Waymo, and other companies.
