LG Energy Solution has announced that it will supply cylindrical battery cells to be used in the new Rivian R2. LG revealed that the new battery cells will have a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 95 mm, and they will be produced at the factory in Arizona, USA.
The new cylindrical battery cells promise to offer a higher energy density compared to the prismatic cell model. Additionally, they will be cheaper and lighter than the current batteries, which Rivian expects will lead to “a significant reduction in dollars per kilowatt-hour (kWh) compared to the R1″.
Furthermore, because they are larger than the R1 batteries, the new batteries will contain fewer cells overall, making the production process more efficient.
The new battery cells will be installed on the new Midsize Platform (MSP), which makes its debut in the R2 and will also serve as the foundation for the R3 and R3X models.
It is already known that this new platform from Rivian will support configurations of two and three electric motors, with an expected range of around 500 km, and an acceleration capability of 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.
