The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) has revealed the report on road accidents and enforcement, between January and October 2023, a period in which 30,738 accidents with victims, 421 fatalities, 2,254 serious injuries, and 36,013 minor injuries were recorded in the mainland and autonomous regions.

Compared to the same period in 2022, increases were observed in all indicators, except for the severity index: 1,936 more accidents (+7.0%), 19 more fatalities (+4.9%), 133 more serious injuries (+6.9%), and 2,268 more minor injuries (+7.0%).

“It should be noted that, compared to 2022, from January to October 2023 there has been an increase in road traffic with a corresponding increase in the risk of accidents, as can be seen from the 7.1% increase in road fuel consumption until October 2023”, ANSR states in a press release.

Collisions were the most frequent type of accident (52.9% of accidents), accounting for 38.5% of fatalities and 46.0% of serious injuries. Rollovers, which represented 34.4% of total accidents, were the main type of accident leading to fatalities (49.8%).

The report also states that from January to October of last year, 134.4 million vehicles were inspected, both in person and through automatic enforcement means, representing a 24.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Infractions amounted to 1.1 million, which is a 12.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Speeding was the most committed infraction, accounting for 70.6% of the total, which represents an 18.5% increase compared to the numbers from 2022. ANSR also indicates that there were increases “in almost all types of infractions, with notable increases in addition to speeding, such as those related to child restraint systems (+20.7%), lack of insurance (+15.5%), and lack of mandatory periodic inspection (+14.0%)”.

Regarding the points-based driving license, ANSR states that since its implementation in June 2016, the number of drivers who have lost points on their driving license is 634.9 thousand, and 2,811 drivers had their driving privileges revoked by the end of October 2023.
