The Public Security Police (PSP), revealed that the number of road accidents and consequent fatalities and serious injuries decreased in the first two months of the year, compared to the same period in 2019 and 2023.

“The data on road accidents recorded in January and February 2024, and their comparison with the same period in the years 2019 and 2023, reveal that this year there was a significant decrease in the number of accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries”, informed the PSP in a statement, noting that the years 2021 and 2022 are not considered for comparison because they correspond to the pandemic period, during which there was less road traffic.

The number of minor injuries and the total number of injuries increased (by 91 and 69, respectively) compared to last year, but the number of accidents decreased (by 520, from 8897 to 8377), as well as their severity, since the number of fatalities “is significantly lower” than the previous year (dropping from 17 to 10), as well as the number of serious injuries (from 122 to 100).

Comparing with the first two months of 2019, there is a decrease in the number of accidents (by 1228), as well as in the number of fatalities (by 1), minor injuries (by 345), and total injuries (by 340). Only the number of serious injuries was higher (by five) this year compared to 2019.

Regarding road surveillance in January and February 2024, the PSP carried out 3990 operations throughout the country, inspected 106,614 drivers, and monitored 481,871 vehicles by radar.

In total, the police recorded 27,777 offenses, of which 5,894 were for speeding, which corresponds to more than 21% of the total infractions recorded.

During the same inspections, 34,558 breathalyzer tests were conducted, resulting in 477 offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The PSP highlights that, of these infractions, 113 were related to “drivers subject to the reduced alcohol rate” (drivers with a driving license for less than 3 years), corresponding to about 24% of the total infractions for driving under the influence of alcohol.

During the same period, 1,040 arrests were made for traffic crimes, including 555 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 485 without legal authorization.
