The most recent edition of the IndyCar safety device, the Aeroscreen, was unveiled in Long Beach a few weeks ago. This new version brings several changes compared to the original 2020 design. The halo structure was updated during the season to reduce weight, and the cars now feature a new polycarbonate screen and carbon fiber structure from the second race of the season. One of the significant updates in the new Aeroscreen design is the addition of more air intakes to cool the drivers, bringing air into the cockpit. Long air intakes were added on top of the windshield, and the side air intakes were slightly modified. However, these changes did not produce the intended results.

Drivers universally reported that the front air intakes do not seem to offer any benefit. Some drivers even raised their hands during races to check the airflow and found none. Graham Rahal shared his experience during the race weekend at Barber, stating that he raised his hand and did not feel any air coming through the air intakes, which was unusual. Despite the initial reaction when the new Aeroscreen was introduced, drivers have adapted to it and the subject is no longer discussed frequently. However, improvements are still desired, especially considering the current warmer conditions.

The most significant issue is in the side inlets, which direct air through a hose connected directly to the pilot’s helmet. These side inlets, although only slightly different from the original design, are not providing as much air as before. This worsens the already uncomfortable conditions inside the cockpit. The pilots promptly reported their findings to the IndyCar inspection and technical teams. These teams are now working to find small modifications that can restore the previous level of airflow, which was present in the last four seasons.
Will Power, one of the drivers, believes that the reduction in air entering the helmet is due to the air coming in through the openings on the top. He suggests that closing these openings and increasing the air in the helmet would be preferable. Breathing one’s own air inside the helmet is described as brutal, as the head is where the body releases heat. However, the upcoming Indy 500 will not feature the new Aeroscreen, as the high speeds reached on the super speedway generally provide enough airflow for the drivers. Interestingly, the previous version of the Aeroscreen, with fewer air inlets, may actually provide more relief based on recent comments. The new design will continue to be used on street and road circuits for the rest of the season, with possible small modifications to help the drivers cope with the summer racing season.
