Six projects for the production of electric vehicle battery cells will receive a total of €852 million in grants from the Innovation Fund, using revenues from the European Union (EU) Emissions Trading System.
The announcement made by the European Commission indicates that the six projects were selected following a first call for proposals for batteries under the Innovation Fund, launched in December 2024, aimed at accelerating growth and investment in the battery manufacturing industry in the EU.
For the European Commission, these projects, in line with the Industrial Action Plan for the European automotive sector and the Clean Industry Pact, will enable concrete progress towards achieving decarbonization goals, while simultaneously strengthening industrial competitiveness and creating high-quality jobs across Europe.
The six projects – ACCEPT, AGATHE, CF3_at_Scale, NOVO One, WGF2G, and 46inEU – are located in Germany, France, Poland, and Sweden and are expected to start operations by 2030.
With the development of the projects, it is expected that they will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 91 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
The six projects, supported by the European Union, are expected to have a combined production capacity of about 56 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electric vehicle battery cells per year when fully operational.
