Brussels and Beijing appear to be closer to reaching a solution regarding the import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to the European Union.

According to Reuters, the confirmation of the rapprochement between the two parties was made by the president of the trade committee of the European Parliament in an interview with the German television channel “n-TV”.

“We are in agreement: China is willing to accept minimum prices and control the volume of exports,” said Bernd Lange to N-TV, without further ado. “This eliminates the distortion of competition through unfair subdivisions, due to the tariffs originally introduced.”

It is worth recalling that in October, the European Union decided to increase tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured in China to up to 45.3% following an investigation that revealed Beijing is providing large-scale subsidies to the electric vehicle sector, generous financial support that allows Chinese manufacturers to sell their cars at artificially lower prices than their European competitors.

Despite the new tariffs coming into effect at the end of October, Brussels and Beijing continue negotiations to find a solution that avoids a trade war.
