Škoda Motorsport has just unveiled a new fully electric competition concept car. This is the Enyaq RS Race, a model developed using innovative technologies that the brand claims will serve as the foundation for future production models.
In this way, Škoda Motorsport equipped the Enyaq RS Race with a series of updates focused on minimizing its weight, utilizing biocomposite materials for the bodywork, including bumpers, wheel arches, roof, and rear wing. These lightweight materials are also applied in the interior, such as the dashboard, door panels, and footrests for both the driver and passenger.
Moreover, the panoramic glass roof of the Škoda Enyaq Coupé RS, which this more radical version is based on, has been replaced with a biocomposite panel. All of this allowed Škoda’s engineers to achieve an overall weight reduction of 316 kg compared to the base model.
The Czech brand also announced that a total of 16 vehicle components are produced using sustainable materials, with natural linen fibers replacing carbon both inside and outside. Additionally, these components are tested under the most challenging racing conditions, for example, in the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, along with sustainable lubricants for engines, transmissions, and shock absorbers.
An example is AmpliTex, a technical reinforcement fabric made from renewable flax fibers grown in Europe. These woven fibers not only reduce vibrations inside while also contributing to weight reduction, but they also serve as a visually appealing design element. Furthermore, the fibers are processed mechanically rather than chemically, and flax cultivation has a significantly lower impact on the soil compared to other crops.
The Enyaq RS Race concept car also features an advanced aerodynamic package that includes a large rear wing, an aerodynamically optimized roof, and a NACA air intake channeling air into the interior.
Additionally, small fins on the rear of the roof direct airflow directly to the rear wing. The air intake for the cooling system has also been redesigned, with the front section now completely solid and air being drawn in from underneath the bumper, requiring a slanted radiator wall.
The redesigned bumpers with two additional air curtains at the front, along with the new rear diffuser and the generous rear wing, enhance downforce, improving handling at higher speeds.
Skoda has also revealed that turbulence around the wheels is minimized by wing-shaped air guiding elements, while the ventilation grilles in the front and rear wheel arches improve aerodynamics and brake cooling. The Enyaq RS Race can also be equipped with aerodynamically optimized wheels.
In terms of powertrain, the Enyaq RS Race does not have any changes compared to the model it is based on, meaning it features two electric motors that deliver a combined power of 335 hp and an 82 kWh battery. Additionally, like the Enyaq Coupé RS, the top speed is 180 km/h, but the lighter weight of the Enyaq RS Race allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds.
“Based on the Enyaq Coupé RS production model, this concept car features a distinctive design with a strong racing DNA, enhanced aerodynamics, and excellent acceleration. In terms of sustainable solutions, the new concept car serves as a pilot project for future innovations in mass production. The biocomposite parts have led to a significant weight reduction, and we are testing them in motorsport, with a view to future implementation.”, stated Johannes Neft, a member of the technical development board at Skoda Auto.
