The more than 1,100 companies in the automotive industry cluster in Portugal recorded a turnover of €16,700 million in 2022 and a gross value added (GVA) of €3,870 million.

The data comes from a study conducted by Deloitte for Mobinov, a platform that aggregates knowledge and competence in the automotive industry, with the aim of promoting increasing competitiveness and internationalization of the sector. The study indicates that, considering its total impact, including the indirect impact on the rest of the economy, the sector represents a consolidated turnover of €21,340 million and an annual wealth (GVA) of €5,720 million, equivalent to 2.4% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Deloitte study was revealed at the 11th Automotive Industry Meeting, promoted in Vila Nova de Gaia by the Association of Manufacturers for the Automotive Industry (AFIA), which started on Thursday, November 23, and makes it clear that the cluster has a strong export orientation, with 99% of its sales being made abroad and accounting for about 23% of national tradable goods exports. It also highlights its high weight in investment in the manufacturing sector, with a mobilizing effect: it accounts for about 19% of investment in the national manufacturing industry.

Regarding employment, the study indicates that the automotive industry cluster directly employs nearly 84,500 people, equivalent to 11% of jobs in the manufacturing industry and 74% of jobs generated by major component suppliers. However, its total impact on the economy amounts to over 170,000 jobs.
