In a perfect NASCAR universe, Kyle Busch would still be driving the iconic #18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), battling for championships and celebrating wins. But reality often takes detours, and Busch’s unexpected departure from JGR after the 2022 season marked one of NASCAR’s most dramatic shakeups in recent memory. Now, a mysterious holiday video from JGR has reignited speculation about the potential return of the legendary #18—and fans are buzzing.

“From Glory to Departure: The #18 Saga”

Kyle Busch, affectionately known as “Rowdy,” became synonymous with the #18 during his illustrious tenure at JGR. From 2008 to 2022, Busch claimed two NASCAR Cup Series championships and a staggering 56 victories with the team. The #18 wasn’t just a car—it was a symbol of dominance.

However, cracks began to show when Mars Inc., the longtime sponsor of the #18 and its M&M’s branding, announced its exit from NASCAR. While Busch’s talent was unquestionable, the sponsorship void left JGR scrambling. Despite efforts to secure a deal with tech giant Oracle, no primary sponsor materialized. The situation left Busch without a clear future at JGR, leading to his emotional departure and subsequent move to Richard Childress Racing (RCR).

Reflecting on his departure, Busch didn’t hold back:

“Did JGR try hard enough to sell me? My answer to that is no,” he told journalist Jordan Bianchi, expressing his disappointment in how the situation was handled.

“The #18 Goes Dark—Until Now?”

Since Busch’s departure, the #18 has been absent from the NASCAR grid, with JGR opting to field the #54 for rising star Ty Gibbs instead. For many fans, seeing the #18 mothballed was a bittersweet reminder of its glory days under Busch.

But a recent Christmas-themed video shared by JGR on Instagram has sparked speculation of a revival. The seemingly innocent clip showcased cookies decorated to celebrate the holiday season and JGR’s racing heritage. Eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed that one of the cookies featured the unmistakable #18.

“Fan Theories Run Wild: Who Will Drive the #18?”

The cryptic inclusion of the #18 cookie sent fans into a frenzy, with many wondering if JGR is planning to bring the number back for the 2025 season. Social media erupted with theories about who might pilot the car if it returns:

  1. A Returning Kyle Busch?
While unlikely, the idea of Busch reuniting with JGR is a romantic notion for fans still nostalgic for his dominant days in the #18.
  2. A New Rising Star?
Some fans speculated that JGR could use the #18 to introduce a promising talent from its development pipeline.
  3. A Veteran Revival?
Could JGR entice a seasoned driver looking for a fresh start? Names like Martin Truex Jr.—if he delays retirement—or even Denny Hamlin have been floated.
  4. Ty Gibbs Switching Numbers?
With Gibbs currently driving the #54, some fans theorized that the young star might switch to the iconic #18, giving it a new chapter while staying within the Gibbs family.

“What’s Next for the #18?”

JGR has remained tight-lipped about the possibility of the #18’s return, but the Christmas tease could signal a carefully orchestrated marketing move—or simply a nostalgic nod. Either way, fans are hopeful.

Bringing the #18 back wouldn’t just reignite memories of its storied past; it would also inject fresh excitement into NASCAR. The number holds a unique place in the sport’s history, and its revival could serve as a symbolic bridge between JGR’s golden era and its future ambitions.

“A Legacy Worth Reviving”

The #18 car isn’t just another number on the grid—it’s a cornerstone of NASCAR’s modern history, tied deeply to Kyle Busch’s legendary career. Its potential return would mark a significant moment for both JGR and NASCAR fans. Whether the Christmas cookie was a deliberate hint or just a nostalgic nod, one thing is clear: the #18 still has a place in the hearts of race fans everywhere.
