The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has rejected Tesla’s application to register the term “Robotaxi.” The decision, reported by “TechCrunch,” is based on the understanding that the designation is considered too generic and is already in use by other companies in the sector.
Tesla intended to associate this trademark with its future autonomous vehicle service; however, the USPTO’s argument is that “Robotaxi” is “merely descriptive”, meaning it is a term already used in the industry. “The term is used to describe similar goods and services by other companies”, adds the note from the U.S. agency.
As reported by TechCrunch, Tesla has other trademark applications pending for designations like “Robobus,” which may have a different outcome.
It is worth noting that Tesla unveiled the Cybercab in the last quarter of 2024. This fully autonomous model is part of Elon Musk’s plan to develop a robotaxi service in the U.S.
