The American electric car brand, Tesla, is recalling 1.68 million vehicles in China due to a malfunction in the trunk lid latch.
The information revealed by the State Administration for Market Regulation of China states that an unlocked trunk lid can open during driving, interfering with the driver’s vision. It has not been disclosed whether this situation has already occurred with any Tesla model.
The Chinese authorities further state in a statement that the vehicles affected by this trunk latch malfunction will be repaired free of charge, and the malfunction will be corrected through a remote software update.
The affected vehicles include imported Model S and Model X, as well as units of Model 3 and Model Y manufactured in China between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.
It should be noted that China is an important market and a production base for Tesla, but also a source of increasing competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Last month, the American company reported a sharp decline in net profit for the second quarter, as sales fell despite price cuts and low-interest financing.
