Tesla will not proceed with the expansion plans for the Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany until its sales increase.
“We will not invest millions of euros in expanding the factory without clear signs that the market is demanding it,” said André Thierig, the director of Tesla’s production unit in Berlin.
Last month, the Brandenburg Environmental Agency approved a portion of Tesla’s expansion plans. The approval will allow the first phase of the project to proceed, creating an asphalted logistics zone and modernizing the pressing area.
This authorization follows another one already issued by the local authorities in Gruenheide, for the expansion of the American electric vehicle manufacturer’s factory to double the capacity of the site to 100 gigawatt-hours of battery production and 1 million vehicles per year.
The global decline in demand for electric vehicles is concerning the automotive companies, as sales of 100% electric models have been dropping in all markets.
However, Tesla believes that electric vehicles are the future of the automotive industry. “We firmly believe that the market will recover again. It is certainly a matter of time,” said the person in charge of the Gigafactory in Berlin.
