Tesla has requested a sales license from Chinese authorities for a new variant of the Model 3 in China.
According to “CarNewsChina,” this is the Model 3+, a version with a rear-wheel drive (RWD) electric motor, which, however, features an NMC battery from LG, currently available only in the Long-range or Performance versions with all-wheel drive (AWD).
Currently, Tesla offers three versions of the Model 3 in China: rear-wheel drive, Long Range all-wheel drive, and Performance AWD. The basic version with rear-wheel drive features a single motor and a range of 634 km, according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, benefiting from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL, with a capacity of 62.5 kWh.
The AWD Long-range version offers a range of 753 km, thanks to a 78.4 kWh ternary NMC battery from LG.
Now, with the new rear-wheel drive version featuring an NMC battery from LG, Tesla could make the Model 3 the model with the longest range ever. However, some details about the new battery that Tesla will use are still pending, which should be revealed soon.
