Tesla Cybertruck Drive Unit Trouble: Is It Tied to Recent Free Motor Replacements?

The highly anticipated Tesla Cybertruck has been hit with a wave of drive unit failures, leaving some early adopters frustrated and concerned. The Cybertruck, which boasts a range of cutting-edge technologies, has experienced issues with its rear drive unit, causing the vehicle to enter turtle mode and limiting its speed to 65MPH.

Several owners have reported hearing a noise or experiencing a jolt before their Cybertruck displayed error codes related to the rear drive unit. While Tesla has addressed many of the teething problems faced by early adopters, these drive unit failures have proven to be a persistent issue. Only the all-wheel drive (AWD) models seem to be affected at this time.

One owner shared their experience with Tesla’s Service Center, praising the employees for reviewing the vehicle’s logs even on a Sunday. The logs suggested that the rear inverter or the rear drive unit could be the source of the problem. It was determined that the rear inverter’s pyro fuse had blown, disabling the rear motor. However, it remained unclear whether the drive unit itself was affected.

Affected owners have reported waiting for over two weeks to receive a replacement rear inverter from Tesla. However, some fortunate individuals have had their issues resolved within a mere two days. Those who drove directly to a Service Center were offered loaner vehicles while their drive unit inverters were replaced, showcasing Tesla’s commitment to addressing the issue promptly.

These drive unit failures have drawn comparisons to last month’s free drive unit replacement offer from Tesla. The company claimed that the offer was part of a survey to assess the drive unit reliability on early Cybertruck vehicles. However, many speculate that it was a proactive move by Tesla to replace faulty drive units, similar to a silent voluntary recall. If the number of drive unit and inverter failures continues to rise, Tesla may be compelled to issue a formal recall, distinguishing it from previous software-related recalls.

Despite these challenges, the Tesla Cybertruck remains an impressive technological showcase. With its unique manufacturing process, body structure, and unproven technologies, the Cybertruck represents Tesla’s riskiest venture to date. While some early adopters have faced setbacks, it is evident that Tesla is actively working to address these issues and ensure the Cybertruck’s long-term reliability.
