Tennessee AD slams NCAA over ‘ill-conceived’ probe.

Danny White Takes Aim at NCAA Amidst University of Tennessee Investigation

In a bold move, Danny White, the Athletic Director at the University of Tennessee, has launched an offensive against the NCAA. As investigations into possible Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) violations at the university continue, White has made it clear that he believes the NCAA is out of touch with what is happening on campuses across the country in the NIL space.

White’s statement, posted on Twitter, has caused quite a stir. While the full statement can be found in the embedded tweet below, one sentence stands out: “It is clear that the NCAA staff does not understand what is happening at the campus level all over the country in the NIL space.” This statement reflects White’s frustration with the NCAA’s lack of understanding and ability to govern in this new landscape.

The NCAA’s handling of NIL issues has been compared to the wild west, with schools seemingly using their financial resources to gain an advantage. It is evident that the NCAA is ill-prepared for the challenges presented by the evolving NIL landscape. This is not a criticism of the student-athletes who are seeking to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness; rather, it is a critique of the NCAA’s failure to adapt to the changing times.

University of Tennessee chancellor, Donde Plowman, shares White’s concerns. She, along with NCAA president Charlie Baker, believes that the NCAA enforcement staff is attempting to retroactively apply unclear guidance to punish institutions like theirs. Plowman argues that the NCAA’s actions are punitive and serve as an example to others in this chaotic environment.

This investigation comes on the heels of the University of Tennessee football program facing scrutiny for over 200 infractions, many of which were related to recruiting violations. The NCAA has already penalized the university with a hefty fine of more than $8 million, recruiting restrictions, and the vacation of 11 victories in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

It remains to be seen how the NCAA’s investigation into the University of Tennessee will unfold. However, one thing is clear: Danny White and others at the university are determined to fight back against what they perceive as a flawed and outdated system.
