Taylor Barnard was interviewed by the Formula E paddock and furthermore, after finishing 14th in Monaco, being called to drive the car just 20 minutes before FP2, following Bird’s hand injury in the morning.
After the race, Barnard stated: “It’s basically the same thing,” he explains.
“Our main focus is to learn as much as we can – if we can score some points, great, but if not, we want to gather as much knowledge as possible.
“Our goal is to have a positive weekend, avoiding unnecessary mistakes, executing the fundamentals correctly, and gaining as many insights as possible from my perspective.”
Barnard also showed remarkable composure racing in Monaco, as he had already competed on the track before. What are Barnard’s impressions of the Tempelhof circuit in Berlin, which presents a different challenge, resembling a typical Formula E track?
“Well, for starters, the surface is very different.
“Clearly, it’s not a typical racing track surface, so that will be quite distinct.”
Barnard is full of confidence when it comes to his own personal goals for this weekend.
“I personally hope to finish in the top ten and earn some points.
“If I can secure just P10, I will still be happy with that, but if I can have a good race, progress, and learn something, that will also be a positive result in terms of my expectations.
“So, in terms of results, a finish in the top ten would make me happy, but the main focus is to keep moving forward and learn a lot.”
The Nissan energy set has been the most unpredictable for some, especially Oliver Rowland, the official team driver, who has often mentioned that the car had unexpected performance in certain races. Barnard noticed this in the customer McLaren?
“To be honest, given my current situation, it’s quite difficult for me to try to interpret the team in that way, I’m not very sure.
“Obviously, if the car is capable of doing it, then we will go and do it.
“We will do the best job we can, but I’m not really in a position to interpret the team in that way.”
Considering the turbulence around Barnard’s debut and now a more solid and planned weekend, he remained remarkably mature and composed. Although he may have less understanding of the team as their reserve driver, he hopes to gain more knowledge as he gains more race experience.
“I’ve had a few race weekends, but being a race driver is always different.
“It’s not the same thing, and even in Monaco, I didn’t have the same kind of days that I have now.
“Preparing and going through all the preparation as a race driver, then I was present in all the meetings, paying attention, but I don’t get the same type of feedback and reaction that a race driver would get.
“I suppose with every race weekend I do as a race driver, I will be able to grow a little more in that aspect, in terms of being part of the team.
“But yes, I feel comfortable in the team, everyone is very supportive and helpful, so that’s not an issue, and I think I just need a little more time – that’s what matters.”
If Barnard performs well in Berlin, his reputation will increase even more, and he may have the opportunity for a full-time position. However, with his involvement in F2 with PHM Racing team also offering a great opportunity and career path, Barnard may face a dilemma. However, he is taking things season by season.
“I am 19 years old, still developing as a driver, so at the moment, thinking about a long-term career in anything is quite challenging – I don’t see myself committed to anything for the next ten years, so I really don’t know.
“I need to grow and learn a bit more and try to establish myself as a driver first, whether it’s another year in F2 to progress further or getting the opportunity to spend the next five years in Formula E?
“I really don’t know what the future holds for me in that sense. My goal is just to learn as much as possible and continue growing as a driver, and I think that will be considered either this year or next.”
There is no doubt that there are drivers in motorsport who are much older than Barnard and seem less comfortable speaking to the media and less confident in themselves. If he takes this attitude to the track, the motorsport world will hear much more from this young man.
