Taylor Barnard Embraces First Full Season in Formula E with McLaren: “The Perfect Step Forward”

NEOM McLaren’s Taylor Barnard is ready to make waves in his first full season in Formula E, a move he describes as a natural next step in his career. After catching attention last season as a stand-in for McLaren at the Monaco E-Prix, Barnard left a strong impression with his skill and adaptability, finishing 14th despite limited time to prepare. His standout performance led to talks that quickly solidified his spot in Formula E.

Reflecting on the decision, Barnard shared, “It was quite easy. I felt comfortable with McLaren—the atmosphere, the support—it all just clicked. And honestly, moving from Formula 2 to Formula E wasn’t difficult. Formula E has come a long way in attracting young drivers.”

Barnard’s switch from Formula 2, where he clinched his first win at Monaco, underscores the appeal Formula E holds for emerging talent. There are only 20 seats in F1, and you see many drivers stuck as reserves or development drivers, sidelined from active racing. In Formula E, you’re part of a high-level, professional series where you can truly build a career.”

Barnard’s debut season will pair him with seasoned veteran Sam Bird, and he acknowledges the value of Bird’s expertise. “Sam’s been in Formula E since the beginning—one of the most experienced on the grid. There’s so much I can learn from him, and his guidance has been invaluable.”

Formula E’s close-quarters, high-intensity racing is something Barnard welcomes. “It’s wheel-to-wheel every event, which makes for exciting racing. Berlin was special for me, a true test of skill in a chaotic, competitive setting. The racing is tough, but fair, and that’s what makes it enjoyable.”

His goals for the season are clear but grounded. “I’ll adjust as we go, depending on how the car performs. But I believe we can achieve strong results. Points, a podium, and even a win—that’s the target.”

With NEOM McLaren and Formula E’s rising profile, Barnard’s ambitions align with a series on the rise. As he steps into the McLaren garage in Woking, Barnard feels the weight of the team’s legacy. “Being part of McLaren—seeing the historic cars, the trophies—gives me pride and confidence,” he said. The name McLaren may be new to Formula E, but it’s iconic in racing, and I’m honored to be part of it.”

Barnard is prepared for the challenge of Formula E’s unique demands and high-stakes competition. With clear goals and a determined spirit, the young driver is poised to make his mark in the electric racing world.
