The Andretti WTR team celebrated their victory at the IMSA Detroit Sports Car Classic, triumphing over Porsche and Cadillac who started on pole position. The race took place in downtown Detroit, near the Renaissance Centre, which serves as the headquarters of General Motors, Cadillac’s parent company. Felipe Albuquerque, in the #10 WTRAndretti Acura ARX-06, starting from fourth position, quickly moved up to second place as soon as the race began. Meanwhile, Ricky Taylor and the Porsche #7 dropped to fourth place. Albuquerque also overtook Sebastien Bourdais in the Cadillac #01 V-Series.R, securing third position. Nick Tandy, the pole position in the Porsche #6, maintained the lead.
Shortly after the start of the race, the yellow flag was waved due to Harry Tincknell’s Ford Mustang GT3 #65 stopping on the track. Tincknell needed assistance and a tow rope to be removed from the racing surface. Once the race resumed, Tandy continued to lead and extended his advantage to almost 5 seconds.
However, disaster struck when Tandy collided with Daniel Serra in the Conquest Ferrari 296 GT3 #35 while trying to overtake him. The collision sent Serra into the barriers, but he managed to continue in the race. Tandy received a penalty for avoidable contact, dropping to sixth position and promoting Albuquerque to the lead.
Both Albuquerque and Bourdais, who was right behind Albuquerque, made pit stops. Albuquerque hoped to gain an advantage over the yellow Cadillac by pitting first, while Bourdais sought to take the lead through an overlapping strategy. Unfortunately for Cadillac, their strategy did not work out and Albuquerque gained time over Bourdais when they returned to the track.
Meanwhile, Cameron, who was in third place for Porsche, took the lead using the undercut strategy that Cadillac failed to successfully execute. The only other car that did not pit was the delayed Tandy in the sister Porsche, resulting in a 1-2 position for the German manufacturer.
The race saw another yellow flag when Connor de Phillippi’s BMW M Hybrid V8 #25 hit the wall, breaking the suspension and forcing the car out of the race. A frustrated de Phillippi got out of the car while the marshals cleared the track.
During this time, Tandy still needed to make a pit stop, and the yellow flag came at the perfect moment. He pitted while the race was under yellow flag and maintained the lead over his teammate Nasr, solidifying Porsche’s 1-2 position.
With 47 minutes remaining, the race resumed, but quickly went yellow again. Jack Aitken in the Cadillac #31 from Action Express tried an ambitious move by diving inside Richard Westbrook in the #5 car from JDC Miller Motorsports. However, the maneuver failed, causing Westbrook to spin and block the track. Eventually, Westbrook managed to turn the car around and unblock the track, but the race continued under yellow flag. Aitken later received a drive-through penalty for this incident.
When the race returned to green, Ricky Taylor relentlessly chased leader Jaminet. Taylor, who had not won an IMSA race in 668 days, was visibly faster. He seized an opportunity at turn 3, the hairpin, and made a bold move to take the lead, which he held until the end.
There were two more brief yellow flags, one for debris and another due to a collision between Aitken and Gianmaria Bruni in the Porsche 963 from Proton Competition. Bruni’s car suffered significant damage and had to retire.
Despite Jaminet’s efforts, he was unable to surpass Taylor, who crossed the finish line with a 1.132-second advantage over the Frenchman from Porsche. Renger van der Zande in Cadillac #01 secured third place, while Felipe Nasr in Porsche #7 finished fifth. Louis Deletraz in Acura #40 from WTR Andretti completed the top 5 with a solid performance.
