Nick Tandy secured the pole position for the Porsche Penske #6 963 after an intense qualifying session for the IMSA Detroit Sports Car Classic.
Both Porsche Penske and Corvette dominated the qualifying session for the third sprint race of the year, occupying the front rows in their respective categories.
During practice, the teams prepared for the challenging 1 hour and 40-minute race, which is the fifth round of the 2024 season.
The tight street circuit, with its concrete walls marking the track limits, tested the skills of the drivers, as they had little room for error in their qualifying attempts.
The 15-minute session began with the field of 11 GTD Pro cars battling for their starting positions.
Ferrari driver Daniel Serra represented the Conquest Racing #35 Ferrari 296, which is making its debut in GTD Pro after competing in the GTD class.
As the drivers warmed up, lap times improved, with both Corvettes, the Vasser Sullivan Lexus #14, and the AO Racing Porsche #77 showing their potential for the pole position.
The competition was fierce, with the top five cars separated by just half a second.
Madison Snow struggled to stand out in the Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 #1, finishing 0.783 seconds behind Frankie Montecalvo in the Vasser Sullivan Lexus #15, who placed tenth.
In the end, Corvette secured the front row in GTD Pro.
Antonio Garcia clinched his 10th IMSA pole position in the Z06 GT3.R #3, with a lap time of 1:09.092, just 0.336 seconds ahead of his teammate Tommy Milner in the Corvette #4.
Jack Hawksworth finished third in the Vasser Sullivan Lexus #14, clocking a time of 1:09.626, followed by Seb Priaulx in the AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R #77, with a time of 1:09.705.
Serra completed the top five with a strong performance in the Ferrari #35, setting a time of 1:09.799.
In the GTP qualifying, Dane Cameron in the Porsche Penske 963 #7 set the fastest lap of the weekend so far, with a time of 1:06.024, breaking the 1:05 mark on the next lap.
The battle for pole position was fierce between the Porsche Penskes and the Cadillacs, with minimal differences between the cars.
Unfortunately, with two minutes remaining, Pipo Derani in the Cadillac Racing #31 went off track and hit the wall, forcing him to use the escape area of Turn 5.
This incident caused a red flag, resulting in the loss of Derani’s two fastest laps and putting him in last place in the GTP, despite being in the pole position battle.
The session ended a bit early, but Tandy held onto his top position and secured pole position for the Porsche Penske 963 #6 with a lap time of 1:05.390.
His teammate, Cameron, came in second with a time of 1:05.514.
Sebastien Bourdais in the Cadillac V-Series.R #01 secured third position with a time of 1:05.762.
Filipe Albuquerque will start in fourth place in the Wayne Taylor Racing Acura ARX-06 #10, setting a time of 1:05.767, while Jordan Taylor came in fifth in the Acura #40 with a time of 1:05.901.
