Szafnauer collaborating with American group to launch 11th Formula 1 team

Otmar Szafnauer, the former Team Principal of Alpine, has announced his involvement in a new Formula 1 team bid supported by American investors. This bid will rival the proposed entry by Andretti. Szafnauer has a wealth of experience in the world of F1, having worked with BAR, Honda, and Force India in various capacities over the years. After being dismissed by Alpine following the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Szafnauer has been without a permanent role in the Formula 1 community.

As options to return as a Team Principal at an existing team are limited, Szafnauer has turned his attention to the possibility of starting a new team with US backing. In a recent podcast, he expressed his interest in a role where he can contribute to the development and competitiveness of a team. While acknowledging the challenges of entering a field with only 10 existing teams, Szafnauer revealed that he has been working with organizations in North America that have the necessary funding to potentially start an 11th team. Although it is not the Andretti bid, the goal is to establish a team and secure an entry into Formula 1. The road to success in the series is not an easy one, as demonstrated by Andretti’s struggles in their bid to join the grid. Despite facing opposition from Formula One Management and the existing teams, Andretti was the only outfit to succeed in the FIA’s tender process. However, they were unable to reach commercial terms with FOM and Liberty Media.

The potential for a partnership with General Motors, which would provide a power unit for Andretti in 2028, remains their only hope. Nevertheless, Andretti has continued their preparations, including the establishment of a facility at Silverstone and the recruitment of hundreds of staff. If Szafnauer and his collaborators are serious about entering Formula 1, they must be prepared for the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead, as Andretti’s journey has shown.
