Suzuki announced that it has reached, by the end of March 2024, an accumulated production of 30 million units of cars in India.
The Japanese brand clarified in a statement that India is the country where it reached the 30 million units milestone the fastest, achieved in 40 years and 4 months since the start of production in India, breaking the record of Japan, which took 55 years and 2 months to reach that production level.
The production of Suzuki cars in India began in December 1983 with its first model, the Maruti 800 from Maruti Udyog, the predecessor company of the current Maruti Suzuki. Currently, production takes place at the Gurgaon and Manesar factories of Maruti Suzuki, as well as at the Gujarat factory of Suzuki Motor Gujarat.
At these three production centers, 16 models are manufactured, including compact cars like the WagonR, Swift, and Baleno; as well as the SUVs Brezza and Fronx.
The current production capacity in India is 2.25 million units annually. In order to ensure a production capacity of approximately 4 million units in India by the fiscal year 2030, and to prepare for the future expansion of the automotive market in that country, it is planned that the new factory in Kharkhoda (Haryana State) will start operating in 2025; and in 2028, the new factory in Gujarat State.
