A new support series for the FIA Formula E, known as NXT Gen Cup, unfortunately had to cancel its inaugural season in 2024. This decision was made just a few days before the first round in Misano, Italy. NXT Gen Cup was intended to be a support category at the remaining European events on the Season 10 Formula E calendar. It would have featured electric Mini Coopers and catered to male and female drivers aged 15 to 25. This would have been the first support series of Formula E since the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy was removed from the calendar in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
However, on Monday, the organization of NXT Gen Cup announced that they will be parting ways with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for the 2024 season. They explained that there were unexpected challenges in preparing the junior series for the joint race weekends with Formula E, which led to their withdrawal at this late stage. Fredrik Lestrup, the founder of NXT Gen Cup, expressed his disappointment and gratitude for the understanding and support shown by the drivers and partners involved. He emphasized their commitment to finding a sustainable solution for the drivers and their ambition to return with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2025. They are currently in discussions with DTM, ADAC, and others to ensure a new calendar for 2024.
In response to the announcement of the NXT Gen Cup, a Formula E spokesperson stated that NXT GEN’s participation in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for Season 10 has been canceled due to unforeseen restrictions faced by the support series. Formula E has already taken steps to ensure the continuity and success of upcoming events, including a revised schedule for the Misano E-Prix. They are also planning additional activities such as autograph sessions, pit lane visits, and promotional activities on the track to enhance the fan experience. Formula E remains committed to nurturing young talent through initiatives like FIA Girls on Track and other impactful programs.
