1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has voiced his support for Lance Stroll, arguing that the Canadian driver has earned his spot on the Aston Martin team. Villeneuve highlighted Stroll’s significant improvement this season, particularly after Fernando Alonso’s contract renewal, noting that Stroll is now performing at a level comparable to his experienced teammate.
Although Stroll faced challenges in previous seasons, including finishing 132 points behind Alonso last year, he has recently exceeded expectations, finishing ahead of Alonso in three of the last four races before the summer break. Villeneuve also credited Stroll’s father, Lawrence Stroll, for rescuing the team from bankruptcy, which he believes justifies Lance’s continued presence in F1.
Villeneuve acknowledged that while Stroll benefits from his father’s ownership, the young driver must continue to prove his capability on the track, especially in a sport where other drivers have also enjoyed advantages from privileged backgrounds.
