The North American branch of Stellantis became aware of a critical safety issue on March 8, 2024, affecting a select number of Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. Following an in-depth review by Stellantis’ Engineering and Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance teams, it was confirmed that 243 units of the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L were manufactured with a seatback anchor issue that compromises occupant safety during a crash.
The recall stems from a deficiency in the strength of the seatback anchor structure. Instead of replacing the faulty anchors, Stellantis plans to reinforce the original structure to ensure it exceeds the federally mandated strength requirements. Jeep Grand Cherokee L owners affected by this issue will not bear any costs for the necessary repairs. Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed by September 27, 2024.
Given the difficulty in determining the precise production date of each affected vehicle, owners are strongly encouraged to verify if their Jeep is included in this recall by checking their 17-character VIN on Mopar’s recall portal. All Grand Cherokee vehicles for the U.S. market have a VIN starting with “1” as they are manufactured in the United States.
The long-wheelbase Jeep Grand Cherokee L, along with its regular-wheelbase counterpart and the plug-in hybrid variant, are produced at the Mack Avenue Assembly Complex in Detroit. The Jefferson North Assembly Plant also manufactures the standard Grand Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee 4xe, and the Dodge Durango. However, the Durango is set to be replaced by a new electrified utility vehicle in 2026, according to the latest UAW-Stellantis agreement.
Looking further ahead, the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to debut in 2027. The current Giorgio platform may be replaced by the STLA Large platform, reflecting Stellantis’ ongoing shift towards electrified powertrains.
The fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, internally referred to as the WL series, first hit the market in 2021, with the Grand Cherokee L being the only available variant at launch. The standard Grand Cherokee followed in 2022. As of now, the entry-level Laredo A trim, which features rear-wheel drive and second-row seating, starts at $36,495. The Grand Cherokee L, offering three-row seating, begins at $40,035 with rear-wheel drive or $42,035 with all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe is priced at $60,490 and comes exclusively with two-row seating.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe delivers an electric-only range of 26 miles, with a combined fuel efficiency of 23 miles per gallon when the electric motor is not in use. In comparison, the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Grand Cherokee achieves up to 22 miles per gallon on the combined cycle.
