Stellantis is in advanced negotiations with Leapmotor to develop a new electric SUV for Opel, in a project that could mark a new phase in collaboration between European and Chinese manufacturers.
Partnership may accelerate development and reduce costs
According to sources close to the process, the model is expected to use technology from Leapmotor and be produced at the Zaragoza factory in Spain.
The goal is to reduce costs and shorten development time, at a time when Stellantis is adjusting its strategy to give more weight to hybrids, after revising down its plans for 100% electric vehicles.
Common platform with Chinese model
The new electric Opel is expected to share the technical base with Leapmotor’s compact SUV B10, which will also be produced at the same facility for the European market.
Production is expected to start in 2028, with an estimated capacity of around 50,000 units per year.
Chinese technology and European design
Under the terms being discussed, Leapmotor will be responsible for supplying key components, including electronic systems, while Opel will take on the exterior design of the model.
A significant part of the development may take place in China.
Agreement may be finalized soon
Negotiations began at the end of 2025 and could be completed this month, although neither company has officially confirmed the details of the project.
Stellantis has only stated that it maintains regular contact with Leapmotor to explore new forms of collaboration.
Strategy to face Chinese competition
This project arises in a context of increasing pressure from Chinese brands in the European market, with manufacturers like BYD gaining market share.
At the same time, Stellantis is looking to improve the utilization of its factories in Europe, particularly in Spain.
More projects under study
In addition to this SUV, other joint initiatives are being analyzed, including a possible Alfa Romeo model based on the same platform, as well as projects for smaller segment vehicles.
There are also studies to apply Leapmotor technology in the next generation of the Opel Mokka.
A new balance in the electric strategy
Despite having acknowledged that it overestimated the pace of the electric transition, Stellantis continues to keep electric vehicles as a central part of its strategy, especially in Europe.
The potential partnership with Leapmotor could be decisive in ensuring competitiveness in a rapidly changing market.
