Stellantis announced that it has agreed with unions to implement up to 200 voluntary layoffs at its Termoli plant.
The announcement comes after similar situations at other Italian factories, allowing the Fiat manufacturer to reduce its workforce in the country by around 1,000 employees.
The initiative is part of the company’s strategy to rejuvenate its workforce in Italy, which recently included around 300 new hires in Turin, the historic city of Fiat, and Atessa, in central Italy, Stellantis said in a statement.
The company has fewer than 40,000 employees in Italy, compared to 55,000 at the beginning of 2021, when it was formed through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot manufacturer PSA.
“Stellantis reaffirms that Italy is at the center of the group’s strategies,” it stated.
It is worth noting that Stellantis presented a plan to the Italian government last December to revitalize production in the country, following years of declining output, but the benefits are not expected to be felt until 2026.
