Stellantis, one of the leading automobile manufacturers and mobility service providers internationally, announced that it will adopt Google’s Android operating system for the software of its vehicles, after canceling the collaboration agreement with Amazon.
The decision now announced puts an end to three years of development on the failed SmartCockpit project, which was announced in January 2022 as the cornerstone of Stellantis’s software and connectivity strategy for the future of mobility.
A transformative experience in the cabin was promised: adaptable interfaces, integration with smart homes, advanced navigation, and e-commerce. However, the ambitious project was officially canceled after several delays and technical obstacles.
The two companies aimed at the time to develop a set of software products and services that should be perfectly integrated into the digital world of users, with over-the-air (OTA) updates, as well as integration with home devices and Amazon services, including Alexa.
According to “Reuters,” the two companies confirmed the mutual decision to halt the development of this onboard technology without citing the reasons.
