Stefano Domenicali: Imola’s F1 Fate Sealed? Liberty Chief Hints at Dramatic Return

Imola Grand Prix Dropped from 2026 Calendar, Domenicali: “It’s Not Over, It Can Return”

Formula 1 fans were left stunned as the iconic Imola Grand Prix was excluded from the 2026 F1 calendar. The Emilia Romagna GP, a fan favorite, will not be part of the upcoming season, much to the disappointment of racing enthusiasts worldwide.

The decision to drop Imola from the calendar comes as a surprise, especially after the event’s successful run from 2021 to 2025. The cancellation of the 2023 edition due to a devastating flood dealt a severe blow to the historic circuit.

Replacing Imola on the calendar is the GP of Madrid, although the circuit is still pending homologation. Imola remains as the first reserve should any unforeseen circumstances affect Madrid or any other host city.

Stefano Domenicali, the head of Liberty Media, reassured fans that Imola’s exclusion in 2026 does not mark the end of its relationship with F1. He stated, “At this moment, its presence in the 2026 calendar stops, barring surprises. However, the possibility of Imola making a comeback in the future is not out of the question. The conditions for its return need to be further discussed.”

While Imola’s absence raises eyebrows, Domenicali hinted at the challenges of hosting multiple races in one country. With the exception of the United States, accommodating two Grand Prix events poses a significant challenge. This warning extends to Barcelona, which is eager to secure its spot on the calendar for 2027.

Domenicali emphasized the growing interest in F1, making it increasingly difficult for countries to host two races simultaneously. He highlighted the need for a strategic approach to managing multiple events within the same nation.

Looking ahead to 2027, the rotation of historic tracks could be a key strategy to accommodate all interested parties. Domenicali expressed optimism about the future, stating that the exclusion of Imola in 2026 is not a permanent farewell but rather an opportunity to explore new possibilities.

As the F1 landscape continues to evolve, the fate of iconic circuits hangs in the balance, with fans eagerly anticipating the return of beloved races like the Imola Grand Prix.
