It is already known that Smart will stop being a 100% electric brand, at least for now only in China, where the Geely Group brand has just revealed the first images of the new #5 plug-in hybrid, known as Smart #5 EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive).
The hybrid system of the new #5 EHD combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 160 hp of power, combined with an electric motor and a battery that Smart claims is lithium iron phosphate with a capacity of over 40 kWh.
In this way, the Smart #5 EHD announces an electric-only range of up to 250 km, in the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is usually quite generous, and a total range of 1600 km.
This plug-in hybrid version of the Smart #5 has a length of 4.75 meters, a width of 1.92 m, a height of 1.71 m, and a wheelbase of 2.90 meters, which is 5mm longer than the 100% electric variant, making this plug-in hybrid version the largest model from Smart.
On the outside, the differences are few compared to the fully electric version, highlighting the well-known Boxy design, and a LiDAR system installed on the roof that suggests the model is equipped with advanced driver assistance features.
