The FIA World Endurance Championship 2024 was held in Doha, Qatar, from February 28 to March 2, 2024. The race was dominated by Porsche, with Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and Andre Lotterer taking the victory in the 1812 km event in Qatar. They finished ahead of the JOTA team’s Porsche customer car, driven by Will Stevens, Norman Nato, and Callum Ilott, and the factory car of Matt Campbell, Michael Christensen, and Fred Makowiecki. This resulted in a full Porsche podium.

The Peugeot 9X8 car, driven by Jean-Eric Vergne, Mikkel Jensen, and Nico Muller, held second place for most of the race. However, Vergne experienced a loss of power on the final lap, allowing the two Porsches to overtake and secure second and third place. Peugeot ultimately finished in a disappointing seventh position.

Porsche #6 led for a significant part of the race, facing strong competition from both Peugeot and other Porsches, including the JOTA team’s car #12. Porsche #5, which qualified in pole position, quickly lost the lead to Miguel Molina in the Ferrari #50. Muller, driving the Peugeot #93, made impressive progress, moving from sixth to third place and eventually overtook Molina to take the lead.

Meanwhile, Vanthoor in Porsche #6 was battling with Christensen, who had dropped to fourth place after a maneuver by Stevens in the JOTA team’s Porsche #12. As the pit stop cycle ended, Molina dropped to sixth place due to a penalty, allowing Vanthoor to move up to second. He then focused his efforts on catching Muller, who was leading the race.

Vanthoor took advantage of a mistake by Muller in turn 1 and took the lead. From that point on, the Porsche team maintained their position in front, extending their advantage over Peugeot. However, there were moments of tension for Porsche, including an incident where Estre overtook the ASP team’s Lexus RC F GT3 #87, resulting in contact and a penalty for the Lexus team.

Despite losing the number panel and leader lights due to the collision, Porsche chose not to repair these issues, as the race was being held under floodlights. To avoid possible penalties, they made a pit stop to attach a new adhesive number panel to the car.

In the final laps, Campbell, who was in fourth place, attempted to catch Ilott in third. However, Campbell briefly went off track, allowing Ilott to maintain his position. Eventually, Ilott also overtook Vergne to secure second place, with Campbell finishing third. This meant that Porsche Penske claimed the first and third positions.

Alex Lynn, Earl Bamber, and Sebastien Bourdais finished fourth driving the Cadillac V-Series.R #2. The Ferrari AF Corse #83, driven by Yifei Ye, Robert Kubica, and Robert Shwartzman, secured fifth place. Nyck de Vries brought the Toyota GR010 Hybrid #7 home in sixth place.

The race marked a significant moment for Toyota, as it was the first time they did not lead a WEC race in a while. The Peugeot 9X8 #7, driven by Muller, Vergne, and Jensen, finished seventh after suffering a power failure towards the end of the race. Ferrari #50 and Alpine A424 #35 completed the eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Toyota #8 completed the top 10.
