Formula E is finalizing its 2024/25 calendar, which will be sent to the FIA for approval next month. The championship aims to start its next season in December 2024, allowing for more races to be held over a seven-month period and taking advantage of a more relaxed race schedule. The proposed start in December would likely be in São Paulo, Brazil, with two events planned for the city. However, scheduling conflicts with Formula 1 and the FIA Prize in Kazakhstan have made it challenging to finalize the dates. Despite the obstacles, Formula E is considering accepting a clash with the F1 season finale for the race in São Paulo.
After the event in São Paulo, Formula E plans to kick off 2025 with the traditional race in Mexico City in mid-January, followed by a double-header in Diriyah at the end of January or in February. The United States is also a crucial market for Formula E, and while Portland currently hosts the event in the US, there are discussions about the possibility of adding a race at the Homestead circuit near Miami. Homestead has a strong relationship with Formula E and could provide a suitable venue, although logistical challenges and mixed interest from drivers need to be considered. Formula E is also exploring the possibility of hosting a race in a stadium within Miami, potentially in 2026.
The CEO of Formula E, Jeff Dodds, expressed his interest in returning to China when he took on his role last year. This goal has been achieved with the upcoming race in Shanghai, although the use of the Shanghai International Circuit is seen as a temporary solution. Formula E is exploring possibilities for future races in downtown Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and on Hainan Island. Dodds acknowledges that the Shanghai F1 track is not the best option for Formula E and he would prefer a race in the central Bund district of Shanghai. However, the upcoming race will provide valuable insights into the reception and potential for future events in the city.
Formula E is also planning a triple-header of Asian events from May to June, with the second stage of the Tokyo E-Prix expected to take place in mid-May and a return to China in mid or late June. There are also discussions about adding a race in Chiang Mai, Thailand, although it may not be feasible for 2025. Finding a substitute location for Misano, Italy, is a priority for Formula E, with cities like Bologna, Modena, and Turin being considered as potential alternatives. Monaco is expected to retain its place on the calendar in early May, and a double-header in Berlin has already been confirmed for mid-April. Formula E is also looking for a permanent venue in the UK beyond the current ExCeL Arena location, with options such as the Olympic Park in Stratford or the use of stadiums in London being explored.
