The Formula E rookie test sessions took place in Berlin on Monday, with Robert Shwartzman emerging as the fastest driver for DS Penske. Shwartzman, who is also a reserve driver for Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1 and competes in the FIA WEC Hypercar with AF Corse, set a time of 1:01.937s. The testing day featured 22 drivers from the 11 Formula E teams, with morning and afternoon sessions lasting three hours each. Shwartzman’s impressive performance was not far off from Jake Dennis’ pole position time on Sunday, with just a 0.118s difference. Aston Martin development driver Jak Crawford secured second place with a time of 1:02.110s, closely following Shwartzman by 0.173s. BMW FIA WEC driver Sheldon van der Linde also impressed by setting the third fastest time of the day (1:02.167s) while driving for Jaguar. 2022 Formula 2 champion Felipe Drugovich finished fourth for Maserati (1:02.171s), followed by Kush Maini of Invicta Racing F2 in fifth for Mahindra Racing (1:02.208s). Red Bull junior driver Enzo Fittipaldi secured sixth place in the second Jaguar car (1:02.211s), with 2023 F2 runner-up Frederik Vesti close behind in the second Mahindra machine. It is worth noting that Vesti’s fastest time was set during the morning session, as was the case for Tim Tramnitz (13th place) driving for ABT Cupra, Jonny Edgar (15th place) driving for DS Penske, Ugo Ugochukwu (17th place) driving for McLaren, and Dries Vanthoor (21st place) driving for Envision Racing. Rounding out the top 10 were Zane Maloney, Andretti FE reserve, Sauber F1 reserve, and F2 championship leader, who finished with a time of 1:02.279s. The Nissan duo, Gabriele Mini (1:02.376s) and Caio Collet (1:02.376s), completed the top 10.
Edgar had his second experience in a Formula E car on Monday, after a brief stint marred by technical difficulties last year with Envision. The British driver is embarking on a dual campaign in IMSA and the European Le Mans Series in 2024, after competing in the FIA Formula 3 last year. Edgar expressed his belief in the benefits of driving different vehicles, stating: “I think it’s always advantageous to experience a wide variety of vehicles. From a learning perspective, you can observe how different teams operate, and there is always something to learn that can be applied in races in other arenas. It may not be immediately applicable, but I am confident it will be useful in the future. I am extremely grateful to the team for this opportunity.”
The rookie test is specifically designed for drivers who have not participated in a Formula E race weekend. Its goal is to assess their interest in the series and allow teams to identify potential talents. Edgar did not rule out the possibility of racing in Formula E in the future, stating: “It is certainly a series that piques my interest. I have always enjoyed watching as the races are consistently exciting. In addition, the technical aspect and the level of control the team has over the car’s systems fascinate me. So, if given the chance, it is definitely something I would be interested in pursuing.”
