Shocking Snubs and Victories at Laureus Sports Awards 2025: Verstappen, Marquez, McLaren Denied!

In a shocking turn of events at the 2025 Laureus Sports Awards, some of the biggest names in motorsport were left empty-handed as other athletes took the spotlight.

Max Verstappen, who was a frontrunner for “Sportsman of the Year” after clinching the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, was surprisingly snubbed at the ceremony. The prestigious award went to Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, the Swedish pole vaulter who set the world on fire with his gold medal-winning performance at the Paris Olympics and multiple world record-breaking achievements.

Not even the powerhouse McLaren team, which secured the 2024 F1 Constructors’ title, could secure a victory at the awards. Despite their fierce competition against Ferrari, McLaren lost out to Real Madrid, the football team led by the master tactician Carlo Ancelotti, who claimed both the Spanish Liga and the Champions League in 2024.

In another unexpected twist, Marc Marquez, the Spanish MotoGP sensation riding for Ducati, was left disappointed at the ceremony. Despite his remarkable comeback in the ongoing MotoGP championship, where he sits at the top, Marquez was bested in the “Comeback of the Year” category by Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, the gold medalist in the artistic gymnastics floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.

The Laureus Sports Awards 2025 proved to be a night of surprises and upsets, showcasing the diverse talent and fierce competition across various sports disciplines.
