In a stunning turn of events at Alpine, Jack Doohan was unexpectedly replaced by Franco Colapinto just before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, sparking a wave of controversy in the Formula 1 world. Former F1 champion Jenson Button has now entered the fray, demanding a major overhaul in the sport’s rules following this unexpected driver switch.

During a recent broadcast on Sky Sports F1, Button expressed his strong belief that teams should not have the liberty to swap drivers mid-season. The abrupt decision by Alpine to sideline Doohan after only six races in his debut season has sent shockwaves through the racing community.

Button, alongside F1 analyst Karun Chandhok and lead commentator David Croft, delved into the repercussions of Alpine’s bold move. Chandhok condemned the decision, highlighting the injustice faced by Doohan, who showed glimpses of promise despite a challenging start to his F1 career.

The debate escalated as Croft suggested that commercial interests likely steered Alpine’s decision, prompting Button to advocate for a rule mandating drivers to compete for the entire season if under contract. The former racing ace argued that contractual obligations should be honored, barring any exceptional circumstances like injuries.

As the controversy rages on, Flavio Briatore, now at the helm of Alpine following Oliver Oakes’ sudden departure, has hinted at an indefinite stint for Colapinto in the team. The Argentine driver was initially slated for the next five races but could potentially extend his tenure beyond that.

The Formula 1 community remains divided over Alpine’s contentious driver swap, with Button’s impassioned plea for stability in the sport setting the stage for a potential revolution in F1 regulations. Amidst the turmoil, the racing world eagerly awaits the next chapter in this gripping saga that has reshaped the landscape of motorsport.
