Shaq Takes Over NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson’s Daytona 500 Car Gets an Orlando Magic Makeover

Move over, Michael Jordan—Shaquille O’Neal is bringing his larger-than-life presence to NASCAR. In a jaw-dropping turn of events, the NBA Hall of Famer has put his unmistakable stamp on the 2025 Daytona 500, thanks to a free throw contest gone hilariously right.

After an unexpected online trash talk session with seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Shaq found himself in a high-stakes shooting challenge—one that defied all odds. The result? A Shaq-designed race car, themed after his iconic Orlando Magic era, set to hit the track in The Great American Race.

Shaq Beats Jimmie Johnson in a Free Throw Contest—Yes, Really.

If there’s one thing NBA fans know, it’s this: Shaq can’t shoot free throws. Or at least, that’s what everyone thought—until he stunned the world by outshooting Jimmie Johnson in a contest that was supposed to be a joke.

What started as Twitter/X banter quickly escalated into a real-life challenge. The stakes? If Shaq won, he’d get to design Johnson’s car for Daytona. No one took it seriously—until Shaq actually won, 5-4.

True to his word, Johnson and Carvana unveiled the new Shaq-inspired paint scheme, and it’s nothing short of a 90s basketball fever dream.

Jimmie Johnson’s Orlando Magic Car: A Tribute to Shaq’s Dominance

🚗 Pinstripes? Check.
🎨 Orlando Magic’s blue-and-black color scheme? Absolutely.
🔥 Shaq’s signature “Dunkman” logo? Front and center.

The Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet now resembles Shaq’s legendary Orlando Magic jersey, throwing it back to the early 90s—when the Big Diesel was shaking backboards and redefining basketball.

Steve Taranto of CBS Sports put it best:

“Carvana has unveiled Jimmie Johnson’s Shaquille O’Neal-designed paint scheme and firesuit for the Daytona 500. It’s based on Shaq’s original NBA uniform with the Orlando Magic in the 1990s, complete with pinstripes and the ‘Dunkman’ logo.”

It’s not just a paint job—it’s a statement.

Could Shaq Become NASCAR’s Next Big Owner?

With Jordan already invested in NASCAR, could Shaq follow suit?

The Dunkman logo, which Shaq personally patented, has never been seen on a NASCAR stock car before. The fact that it’s now plastered on a Next-Gen Chevrolet Camaro hints at something bigger. Could this be Shaq’s way of testing the waters for a long-term commitment?

After all, Legacy Motor Club—where Johnson competes part-time—is co-owned by Maury Gallagher and Richard Petty. With NASCAR becoming a new playground for NBA legends, an investment from Shaq wouldn’t be shocking.

Jimmie Johnson Gears Up for Daytona 500 Return

While Shaq steals headlines, Johnson remains focused on his on-track mission. After finishing 28th in last year’s Daytona 500, the seven-time champion is back for another shot in 2025, battling a stacked field that includes:

🏁 Martin Truex Jr.
🏁 Helio Castroneves
🏁 Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, and the sport’s biggest names

With months of preparation ahead, Johnson will look to make a stronger showing in what could be one of his final Daytona 500 starts.

And if Shaq’s “magic” works, who knows? Maybe Jimmie Johnson pulls off a Cinderella win in a car inspired by basketball royalty.

Either way, one thing is for sure—Daytona just got a whole lot bigger, louder, and funnier.
