Antonio Felix da Costa once again showed resilience and strength at the Shanghai E-Prix, securing an impressive victory. The Tag Heuer Porsche driver led approximately half of the race, using his experience to clinch first place for the second consecutive weekend. This marked a change in da Costa’s luck, who initially finished fifth due to a time penalty in the previous race. Jake Hughes of NEOM McLaren, despite not being able to convert his pole position into a win, was ecstatic with his second place, marking his first time on the FIA Formula E podium. Norman Nato secured his first podium of the year, while Nick Cassidy kept his title challenge alive with a fourth-place finish. Pascal Wehrlein, on the other hand, finished outside the points due to a tire puncture early in the race.
In the race, Stoffel Vandoorne took the lead from Hughes early on, with Nato moving up to fourth position. However, Rowland had a setback, dropping to 11th place. Da Costa made a bold move on Hughes in the final sector of the second lap, securing second place. Hughes, Nato, de Vries, and Cassidy were the first drivers from the front pack to activate Attack Mode.
On the fourth lap, Nato overtook Hughes and da Costa to secure second place, passing them on the outside. He then took the lead when Vandoorne activated his Attack Mode. Hughes and de Vries activated their second attack on the fifth lap, while Nato maintained the lead. Cassidy activated his second attack on the following lap, with Nato doing the same on the seventh lap, handing the lead back to Vandoorne. The race had a lower intensity compared to the previous one.
Wehrlein had difficulties to progress and activated the Attack Mode on the eighth lap, dropping to 12th place. Da Costa and Vandoorne activated their second Attack Mode on the ninth lap, allowing Nato to regain the lead. On the tenth lap, Cassidy and Vandoorne battled for position, with the Belgian driver holding onto fourth place. Günther moved up to seventh place, overtaking de Vries. Da Costa was the next driver to activate his second attack, with Nato back in the lead. Meanwhile, Frijns made significant progress, moving up from the back row to tenth place.
On the 12th lap, Vandoorne overtook Hughes to secure third place at turn one, while Wehrlein was forced to pit due to a puncture caused by contact with Sam Bird, ruining his race. On the 14th lap, Nato continued to lead with a gap of approximately three tenths, while the battle behind him intensified. Hughes moved back to third place. Cassidy and Evans, both with more energy than their competitors, held fifth and sixth places, respectively. Da Costa overtook Nato, extending the gap to half a second.
Cassidy advanced to fourth place ahead of Vandoorne, while Nato bravely defended his position from Hughes, who was eager to secure his first Formula E podium. Dennis activated his second Attack Mode on the 18th lap, trailing behind Müller and Frijns in 11th place. Vergne was the last driver to activate his second attack. Cassidy had front wing damage while battling for position with Hughes in second place, as both McLaren drivers closed in on da Costa’s Porsche.
Bird, who was about to score points, abandoned on the 19th lap after colliding with de Vries at the final chicane, causing the Dutch driver to drop to 17th place. Vandoorne trailed behind the two Jaguars, settling for sixth place and facing pressure from his teammate Vergne. Both Penske drivers struggled with energy. Although Cassidy had an advantage over his competitors, he had his front wing shaking due to contact with Hughes in turn one. Da Costa maintained his lead confidently, with Hughes and Nato in pursuit.
In the last four laps, da Costa remained in the lead, with Hughes close behind. However, da Costa proved unbeatable, crossing the finish line to secure his second victory in Season 10. Hughes finished second, securing his first Formula E podium, while Nato secured an impressive third place, increasing his chances of contract renewal with Andretti. With Wehrlein unable to score, Cassidy was satisfied with his fourth place, extending his lead in the championship. Evans finished fifth, solidifying Jaguar’s position at the top of the Teams’ Championship.
