Shane van Gisbergen, the three-time Supercars champion, has candidly shared the highs and challenges of his transition to NASCAR ahead of his highly anticipated 2025 full-time Cup Series debut with Trackhouse Racing.
After a successful debut season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing, where he captured three wins, van Gisbergen is gearing up to take on the premier NASCAR Cup Series in the No. 88 Chevrolet. Speaking about his NASCAR journey so far, van Gisbergen emphasized the steep learning curve and the refreshing challenges the sport presents.
A Whole New World: Adjusting to NASCAR and Life in the U.S.
For van Gisbergen, the switch from Australia’s Supercars to America’s NASCAR wasn’t just about adapting to new cars and tracks—it also meant starting a new chapter far from home:
“I’m a lot older, but moving from Australia to America—being across the other side of the world from your family and friends—it’s difficult. I’ve had a blast. It’s been like a completely different sport—it’s so unlike any other racing I’ve ever done, and that’s great. It’s been such a challenge and a big refresh for me.”
He highlighted how NASCAR’s schedule, widely regarded as one of the most grueling in motorsports, pushed him to adjust his approach. Despite the relentless pace of the sport and the unique demands of oval racing, SVG has embraced the journey:
“Some aspects of it have been a struggle, especially on the ovals, but that’s what guys grew up doing here. NASCAR also has a really hectic schedule, but I love it.”
Building Bonds Amid Fierce Competition
Van Gisbergen was quick to note the camaraderie among NASCAR drivers, an aspect that stood out to him compared to other racing series. While drivers are fierce rivals on the track, their frequent battles foster a sense of mutual respect:
“All of the drivers have been pretty friendly. You can’t not be friendly because you race each other every week.”
Eyes on the Cup: Ready for the Big Stage
Looking ahead to his first full-time season in the Cup Series, van Gisbergen is optimistic about the opportunities awaiting him. He believes the Cup car’s style may align better with his driving skills, particularly on road courses and intermediate tracks. However, he remains focused on learning and adapting:
“The cars are very different to what I’m used to, but hopefully the Cup car will suit me better. I’ve just got to be patient and not try to force things. The results will come once I get comfortable, but I’m definitely ready to go.”
The Path Forward
SVG’s move to the NASCAR Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing marks a pivotal moment in his career. After proving his capabilities in Xfinity, expectations are high for the Kiwi driver as he takes on some of the best in stock car racing. With a proven track record and a commitment to mastering new challenges, van Gisbergen is poised to make a significant impact in 2025.
All eyes will be on the No. 88 Chevy as SVG embarks on his next chapter in NASCAR’s top tier.
