Shane van Gisbergen Makes History with Most Foreign-Born NASCAR Wins

In what can only be described as a monumental moment, Shane van Gisbergen etched his name in the history books by becoming the most successful foreign-born driver in the NASCAR Cup Series. His third career victory came at none other than the Chicago Street Course in 2025. It’s impressive, really. This win cements his status as a trailblazer—one challenging a sport traditionally steeped in American roots. Now, if you think back just a few years, seeing international drivers dominating NASCAR was pretty rare, wasn’t it? But things are changing fast.

Here’s what’s happening: NASCAR has opened its doors wider than ever before. Just take a look at the 2025 Cup race at Watkins Glen for evidence of this shift—drivers from seven countries were tearing up that track! That’s unheard of and set an all-new series record, no less. Eleven races have been snagged by non-American racers; five of those wins happened over just five years! Talk about shaking things up.

Now let’s focus on Daniel Suarez for a second—he’s made waves of his own. Back in 2016, he became the first non-US driver to win a national-level title with his Xfinity Series championship victory. It just goes to show how global talent is increasingly leaving tire marks on these circuits.

The parade of international victors doesn’t stop there, though. Names like Shane van Gisbergen and Marcos Ambrose immediately come to mind—they’ve smashed through barriers with their skills on road courses and beyond. And we’ve got folks like Ron Fellows, Stewart Friesen, and Juan Pablo Montoya who’ve each had their moments proving that racing prowess knows no borders.

What’s clear now more than ever is that NASCAR is embracing this mix of cultures and talents with open arms—and it’s thrilling to watch. The legacy being carved out by these international stars offers inspiration across the globe for budding racers dreaming big right now because speed? Well…it speaks every language imaginable when you’ve got champions driving home its point with such flair on tracks everywhere.
