Shane van Gisbergen Dominates NASCAR: Is He the Greatest Road Racer in History?

Shane van Gisbergen: NASCAR’s Unstoppable Road Racing Phenom

In an electrifying display of speed and skill, Shane van Gisbergen has emerged as NASCAR’s premier road racer, leaving his competitors in the dust. Following his jaw-dropping victory at the Charlotte Roval, where he dominated the field, finishing a staggering 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Larson, the racing world is abuzz with admiration. Larson candidly admitted, “He was just way faster than we were… He’s just so far beyond all us on these tracks right now.”

This victory marks a monumental achievement for van Gisbergen, as it signifies his fifth consecutive win on road courses in the NASCAR Cup Series—a feat that inches him closer to the legendary Jeff Gordon’s record of six straight wins from 1997 to 2000. Justin Marks, van Gisbergen’s team owner at Trackhouse Racing, boldly declared on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, “When his time is done here in NASCAR, I think he’s going to be unanimously considered the greatest road racer that the sport’s ever seen.”

Such high praise from Marks is significant, given his own background in road racing, where he has witnessed the talents of many elite drivers. “I’ve just never seen anybody like SVG,” he stated emphatically. Van Gisbergen’s NASCAR journey has been nothing short of sensational. He stormed onto the scene with a thrilling win at the inaugural Chicago Street Race in 2023, marking the first time since 1963 that a driver won in their debut Cup race.

As of the 2025 season, van Gisbergen’s average lead on road courses is an astonishing 1.8 seconds. His remarkable statistics speak volumes: five victories at iconic tracks including Mexico City, Sonoma, and Watkins Glen, along with leading the majority of laps in several races. This dominance echoes his success in the Xfinity series, where he secured three road wins with Kaulig Racing, showcasing his swift adaptation from three Supercars titles back in Australia.

Marks attributes SVG’s triumphs to the extraordinary execution of the No. 88 team, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their success. “They’ve got somebody so special driving these race cars, to make sure that every T is crossed, every I is dotted,” he remarked. After his latest win, van Gisbergen echoed this sentiment, praising the unity of the team: “You work with the engineers here and even the pit crew guys… just how the team rallies together.”

While van Gisbergen’s prowess on road courses has captivated fans and analysts alike, his journey in oval racing is a different story. As the season progresses, he is determined to improve on oval tracks, with Talladega in his sights as a potential milestone. His first top-10 finish on an oval came at Kansas, where he finished 10th, a promising sign after earlier struggles in the season.

“I probably still need to build my comfort on the mile and a halfs,” SVG confessed. His enthusiasm for super-speedways remains strong, despite previous finishes that have not yet lived up to expectations. “I enjoy the super speedways, but I haven’t got a good result there yet,” he stated, expressing hope for a successful outing at Talladega.

As the NASCAR season enters its final stretch, with races at Las Vegas and Martinsville leading to the championship finale in Phoenix, van Gisbergen is poised to turn his growing confidence into results. With a career road course win rate of 33.3%—ranking third all-time—and a stellar driver rating of 113.8 since 2005, it’s clear why Justin Marks believes SVG is on the verge of redefining what it means to be a road racing legend in NASCAR.

Shane van Gisbergen is not just a name; he is a force to be reckoned with. As fans and critics alike hold their breath, the question remains: can he continue to dominate, or will he rise to the challenge of the ovals as well? One thing is certain—this is just the beginning of a thrilling chapter in NASCAR history.
