Shane van Gisbergen: “I Don’t Agree” – The Road Course Debate Heats Up in NASCAR!

In a bold statement that has sent shockwaves through the racing community, Denny Hamlin recently claimed Shane van Gisbergen is the greatest road course driver in the history of NASCAR during his podcast, Actions Detrimental. However, the man in the spotlight, van Gisbergen himself, humbly disagrees, despite being flattered by his fellow competitor’s lofty praise.

Shane van Gisbergen made an unforgettable entrance into the NASCAR Cup Series when he clinched victory in his debut at the Chicago Street Course in 2023, a feat that had not been achieved since Johnny Rutherford in 1963. Racing under Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 banner in the No. 91 Chevy Camaro, van Gisbergen showcased his extraordinary talent, which has only continued to blossom.

This season has been nothing short of spectacular for the Auckland native, who has already racked up five wins, solidifying his status as the winningest foreign-born driver in NASCAR history. Remarkably, he stands out as the only rookie to secure multiple victories this year, a testament to his skill and determination.

When confronted about Hamlin’s assertion, van Gisbergen candidly responded, “I don’t agree with it, but it’s pretty amazing that my peers think that of me.” He acknowledged the exceptional performances he has delivered on road courses, attributing much of his success to the strength of his car and the support from Trackhouse Racing.

But the road course isn’t the only challenge van Gisbergen faces. He is eager to prove himself on oval tracks as well. His best finish at an oval came earlier this year with a solid 10th place at Kansas Speedway, while his previous best was a 12th at Martinsville in 2024. “I’d hopefully race these guys better on ovals, and they start thinking of me as a serious competitor on ovals. But pretty humbling for them to say that,” he added, reflecting on his aspirations to excel in every aspect of NASCAR racing.

Despite making the playoffs in 2025, van Gisbergen faced a setback, exiting contention in the first round. However, he is far from out of the fight, with four races remaining on the schedule that could see him add to his impressive win tally.

In a stunning display of national pride, Shane van Gisbergen is set to shine a spotlight on his homeland during the NASCAR Cup Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 12. His No. 88 car will sport a striking black and silver livery, adorned with the iconic silver fern, the Southern Cross, and multiple red stars. “Pretty stoked to represent New Zealand as much as I can, and thanks to Jockey for letting me do that,” he expressed, visibly moved when he first laid eyes on his car.

This upcoming race, named the South Point 400, is generating buzz among fans and will be broadcast live on USA starting at 5:30 pm ET. With van Gisbergen entering the race ranked 12th in driver standings with 2142 points, the excitement is palpable as he gears up to make a significant impact once again.

As the debate over road course supremacy rages on, all eyes will be on Shane van Gisbergen as he continues to carve out his place in NASCAR history!
