Shane van Gisbergen crushed by second place finish: a thrilling drive at Circuit of the Americas

Shane van Gisbergen: The Unsettling Feeling of Second Place

In a twist of fate that has left fans and critics alike scratching their heads, Shane van Gisbergen emerged from the Circuit of the Americas with a perplexing sense of disappointment despite clinching a robust second place. This is not just a minor setback; it marks a pivotal moment in his quest for NASCAR glory as he now finds himself ranked fifth in the championship standings after a stellar performance that netted him significant points.

The 2026 season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster for the Trackhouse Racing star. Having dominated every road and street course race in the previous year's NASCAR Cup series—save for one glaring omission at COTA—SVG was eager to rectify that this time around. Although he triumphed in Saturday's NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race, he fell agonizingly short of a complete sweep during the 2026 edition, finishing just one position behind the coveted win.

Starting from a less-than-ideal 13th position, Van Gisbergen showcased his racing prowess as he charged through the pack, even climbing to third before the first pit stops. The determination was palpable as he crossed the finish line in second during the first stage, earning nine valuable stage points. SVG's momentum continued, and he secured an additional stage point by placing tenth in the second stage.

As the race progressed into its final stage, SVG found himself in the thick of the action, just outside the lead battle where Tyler Reddick and Ryan Blaney were setting the pace. The race took a dramatic turn when a natural caution was triggered by teammate Ross Chastain's unfortunate wheel loss, offering Van Gisbergen a glimmer of hope for victory.

On the restart, he made his move, overtaking Blaney and trailing closely behind Reddick for several tense laps. Yet, despite his fierce efforts, SVG could not maintain the pace, ultimately falling four seconds behind the leader. Nonetheless, he crossed the finish line in second, marking his first top-five finish of the 2026 season.

“It's weird to be disappointed with second,” Van Gisbergen lamented as he stepped out of his car. “This series is just so high level and I felt okay. We got our Chevy a lot better than yesterday, but following Tyler – his driving was immaculate, and his car was very good too. I tried. Didn’t quite have enough, but still a great points day for the #97.”

While he acknowledged the need for more grip and drive from his car, he couldn't help but admire Reddick's exceptional performance, saying, “Tyler was just amazing. The way he was driving was really good and his car was good. We just didn’t quite have enough…”

Entering the weekend ranked 16th in the championship standings, Van Gisbergen's impressive performance catapulted him to fifth place, now just 26 points shy of the second position and a staggering 96 points behind Reddick, who continues to set the bar high.

As fans eagerly await the next race, one thing is clear: Van Gisbergen is a force to be reckoned with, and his determination to convert second-place finishes into victories may just ignite a thrilling championship battle. The NASCAR landscape is charged with anticipation as the action heats up—what's next for SVG? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: he’s not done yet.
