Shane van Gisbergen, the three-time Supercars champion, has fully immersed himself in the world of NASCAR, but one aspect of the stock car series that he finds particularly baffling is its playoff format. Now competing full-time in the Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing, van Gisbergen has already impressed with a three-win season, securing himself a spot in the playoffs. Despite his success, the Kiwi driver admits that the NASCAR playoff system is unlike anything he’s ever encountered.
A Complex Challenge for SVG
While preparing for the Kansas Xfinity playoff race, van Gisbergen shared his thoughts on the NASCAR postseason format, describing it as “the most overcomplicated racing series I’ve been a part of.” He expressed amusement at its complexity, which contrasts sharply with the more straightforward championship formats he’s used to in Supercars. Despite finding the system hard to grasp, van Gisbergen also appreciates how it adds excitement for fans.
“I studied it last night [last Monday], trying to understand how it works. The playoff system is crazy. It’s the most overcomplicated racing series I’ve been a part of, but I think it’s pretty cool. It’s great for the fans,” he said.
The unique format, which demands consistent performance across different types of tracks—far beyond just road courses, where SVG excels—adds another layer of difficulty for the Kiwi as he aims to survive and thrive in the postseason.
Educating Fans Along the Way
Van Gisbergen’s confusion over the format led him to turn to one of his sponsors, who published an article breaking down the NASCAR playoff system. In a lighthearted move, he shared the article on his social media pages to help his fans, many of whom were as unfamiliar with the system as he was.
“One of my sponsors put out an article explaining the playoffs and how that all works. I had no idea how it works. It’s so complicated. So, I shared that on my pages, and there’s people saying, ‘Oh, thanks, I didn’t know that’s how it worked.’ Everyone was reading it, learning with me. So, that’s pretty cool,” SVG explained.
Xfinity Playoff Debut: A Strong Start at Kansas
Van Gisbergen made an impressive start to his Xfinity playoff campaign at Kansas, securing an eighth-place finish and earning valuable points to keep his championship hopes alive. With challenging races at Talladega and Charlotte ahead, he’ll need to maintain his form to stay in the playoff contention. While the road ahead may be complex, van Gisbergen’s adaptability and strong performances suggest he’ll continue to be a force to reckon with, even as he navigates the intricacies of the NASCAR playoff system.
Looking ahead to his full-time Cup Series debut with Trackhouse Racing in 2025, van Gisbergen’s journey in NASCAR is just beginning, and he seems ready to embrace both the challenges and the chaos that come with the sport’s unique format.
