Rookie Sensation Liam Lawson Puts Pressure on Sergio Perez for F1 2026 Seat

In a shocking turn of events, rookie Liam Lawson’s outstanding performances for Red Bull in the early stages of the F1 2025 season have not only raised eyebrows but also put pressure on seasoned driver Sergio Perez. The 1978 F1 World Champion, Mario Andretti, has hinted at a potential shake-up in the F1 driver lineup, with Perez possibly being eyed by the new Cadillac F1 team for the F1 2026 season.

After replacing Perez for the 2025 campaign due to a lackluster 2024 season, Lawson’s own struggles have led to his premature replacement by Yuki Tsunoda ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. This abrupt change marks Tsunoda as Max Verstappen’s third teammate in just four races, leaving Perez’s future in the spotlight.

Despite Perez’s challenging seasons in 2023 and 2024, where he failed to secure a podium finish, the Mexican driver is now a hot topic for the new Cadillac F1 team. With their Formula 1 entry approved, Cadillac F1 is rumored to be considering pairing an American driver with an experienced F1 racer for their debut season in 2026.

Andretti, who serves as an advisor for Cadillac F1, hinted at Perez’s potential recruitment, emphasizing how Lawson’s recent struggles have inadvertently highlighted Perez’s strengths. The racing legend cryptically mentioned that Perez is just one of the contenders for the second seat at Cadillac F1, with IndyCar star Colton Herta and former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas also in the mix.

Bottas, a ten-time race winner, is eyeing a comeback to the grid after becoming Mercedes’ reserve driver for the F1 2025 season. Another strong contender for the Cadillac F1 seat is Zhou Guanyu, a former Sauber teammate of Bottas, known for his ties to Ferrari and the team principal of Cadillac F1, Graeme Lowdon.

Cadillac F1’s decision to compete with customer Ferrari engines and gearboxes before developing their power unit has attracted drivers like Zhou, who, like Perez, brings valuable sponsorship funding. With the F1 landscape evolving rapidly, the competition for seats is fierce, and experienced drivers like Perez and Bottas are exploring new opportunities to stay in the game.

As the rumor mill churns and speculations run rampant, one thing is clear – the F1 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons yet, with drivers like Perez and Bottas fighting for their place on the grid. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds, and the battle for the coveted Cadillac F1 seats intensifies.
