Under the neon lights of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Sergio Perez endured yet another challenging weekend, finishing 10th while teammate Max Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive F1 title. As Red Bull’s shareholders prepare to deliberate Perez’s future at the end of the season, the embattled Mexican driver insists he’s on the brink of rediscovering his best form.

Perez Battles to Prove Himself

Perez’s performance in Vegas reflected his season-long struggle for consistency. A disastrous qualifying session saw him eliminated in Q1, starting 16th on the grid. While he managed to claw his way back into the top 10, the result was far from the podium finishes Red Bull expects.

“We’re making progress,” Perez declared. “We understood exactly what happened yesterday in qualifying. We should have done a better job, and we didn’t. But I feel we’re close to turning things around.”

Missed Opportunities in Strategy

Perez placed partial blame for his Vegas woes on a miscalculated race strategy, claiming the team misjudged tire degradation on the unpredictable new circuit.

“We got caught out with the level of degradation we had,” he explained. “We used the best tire at the wrong time and had to do a long stint on the medium, which left me vulnerable in the middle. It was all a little bit out of sync, unfortunately.”

While Verstappen thrived under pressure this season, Perez has often faltered, which could cost Red Bull a realistic shot at the Constructors’ Championship, currently led by McLaren.

A Pivotal Decision Looms

Perez’s underwhelming performances have put his seat in jeopardy, with reports suggesting Red Bull shareholders will meet after the Abu Dhabi finale to decide his fate. Despite flashes of brilliance earlier in the season, Perez’s form has deteriorated, leaving him with only seven points from the last five races.

Team principal Christian Horner has publicly urged Perez to step up, emphasizing the team’s need for a strong second driver to complement Verstappen.

“We need both cars right up there working as a pair, which we haven’t had,” Horner remarked, underscoring Red Bull’s frustration.

Perez’s Uphill Battle

With two races remaining, Perez faces an uphill task to secure his future with Red Bull. While his confidence in a turnaround remains unwavering, the pressure is mounting. The Mexican driver’s window to impress is closing fast, and he’ll need standout performances in Qatar and Abu Dhabi to bolster his case.

What’s Next for Red Bull?

Red Bull’s decision on Perez will shape their strategy heading into the 2025 season. With Verstappen continuing to deliver dominant performances, the team’s focus will shift to finding a reliable teammate who can maximize the car’s potential and deliver consistent results.

For Perez, the stakes couldn’t be higher: it’s now or never to prove he belongs at the pinnacle of Formula 1.
