Sergio Perez reveals shocking truths: Cadillac F1 shakedown faces unexpected hurdles and triumphs

Cadillac F1 Team Faces Turbulent Shakedown: “More Problems Than Surprises!”

In a dramatic unveiling of its inaugural Formula 1 car, the Cadillac F1 Team has experienced a whirlwind of challenges during its first week on the track. The highly anticipated shakedown, intended to debug the vehicle before the competitive season kicks off, has been marred by unexpected complications. Sergio Perez, the team’s star driver, candidly admitted, “More than surprises, problems,” signaling a tumultuous start for the American racing giant.

With just ten months since receiving the crucial nod to enter the elite world of Formula 1, Cadillac took to the closed circuit in Barcelona for a five-day test that was anything but smooth sailing. The shakedown commenced with Valtteri Bottas behind the wheel, who managed to complete 33 laps on the very first day. Perez followed suit, contributing an additional 11 laps, while Mercedes dominated the day with an impressive 149 laps—setting a stark contrast to Cadillac’s early performance.

Day two brought further trials as Perez took the reins, logging a staggering 66 laps, which equates to a full race distance at the Spanish Grand Prix. However, Mercedes continued to outshine the newcomers with an astonishing 168 laps on the same day. The pressure is mounting as Perez openly acknowledged the myriad of issues plaguing the team’s efforts: “Problems on all kinds of fronts – with the engine, with the car, with a few electronic issues.”

Despite the setbacks, the atmosphere within the team remains optimistic. Perez emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges now, rather than during the highly scrutinized opening race in Melbourne. “I’m glad it’s happening now, and of course, we still have a lot of work ahead of us, especially as a new team. These are exciting times,” he stated, hinting at the resilience and determination within Cadillac’s camp.

Team principal, Lowdon, reinforced this sentiment, identifying debugging as the critical priority of the week. “We could have run more laps, or we could have looked to solve certain problems, make sure that they’re solved and tick those off the list,” he explained. The team is taking a methodical approach, using this shakedown to meticulously work through the complex systems of the car—an intricate task that comes with the territory of entering this high-octane sport.

As they navigate through these learning curves, the Cadillac team is not just fine-tuning a new car; they are establishing themselves in a sport that is entirely foreign to them. With upcoming tests scheduled in Bahrain, the pressure to iron out all “gremlins” is palpable. Lowdon expressed confidence in the progress made thus far, while also acknowledging the significant workload that lies ahead.

The stakes are high as Cadillac embarks on its F1 journey, with eyes from around the globe watching intently. Will they rise to the occasion or fall short in their quest for glory? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the road ahead will be anything but dull for the Cadillac F1 Team.
