Sergio Perez Opens Up: Red Bull Future in Doubt After Abu Dhabi GP Disaster

Sergio Pérez’s turbulent 2024 Formula 1 season ended on a sour note at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where a first-lap spin forced him to retire, further denting his prospects of staying at Red Bull Racing in 2025. Despite holding a contract through 2026, Pérez’s seat is now in jeopardy as Red Bull prepares to evaluate its driver lineup.

A Season of Struggles

The 34-year-old’s campaign has been marred by inconsistency, with Pérez finishing a disappointing eighth in the Drivers’ Championship. This underwhelming performance starkly contrasts teammate Max Verstappen’s dominance, with the Dutchman clinching his fourth consecutive title. Pérez’s Lap 1 DNF in Abu Dhabi, following a spin after contact, was emblematic of his season’s woes.

Talks of an Early Exit

In the wake of his Abu Dhabi retirement, Pérez acknowledged that his future with the team is uncertain. While he pointed to his existing contract as leverage, the Mexican hinted at upcoming discussions with Red Bull that could lead to a mutual agreement for an early departure.

“We’re going to be talking in the coming days and we will discuss the situation from both parties,” Pérez said. “We’ll see if we are able to reach an agreement.”

Despite this, Pérez reiterated that his current deal remains valid if no resolution is reached.
“If not, like I said, I’ve got a contract for next year.”

Red Bull’s Next Move

Red Bull has reportedly been considering other options, with drivers like Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson in contention for the second seat alongside Verstappen. Pérez’s underwhelming season, culminating in a disappointing finale, may tip the scales in favor of a fresh lineup for 2025.

Tsunoda and Lawson, currently driving for Red Bull’s sister team, have impressed in their respective roles. Lawson’s mental toughness and rapid adaptation, combined with Tsunoda’s improved consistency, make them strong candidates.

Uncertain Outlook for Pérez

While Pérez remains steadfast in his desire to race for Red Bull next season, the writing appears to be on the wall. An early exit could allow Red Bull to refocus its efforts on building a competitive partnership for Verstappen, while Pérez would likely need to explore alternative opportunities or consider stepping away from Formula 1 altogether.

Red Bull’s Decision Looms

As Red Bull heads into critical discussions in the coming days, the team faces a pivotal decision: stay the course with Pérez or usher in a new era with a promising talent. For Pérez, the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi GP may not just mark the end of a difficult season, but potentially the end of his Red Bull career.
