Sergio Perez Declares “Honeymoon is Over” for Cadillac F1 Team After “Incredible” Debut

In a bold statement that signals a new era of determination for the Cadillac Formula 1 team, Sergio Perez has declared that the initial euphoria following their sensational debut at the Australian Grand Prix has come to an abrupt end. The Mexican driver is pushing for “big steps forward” after the team’s historic entry into the racing world, where they became the first new franchise to hit the track since Haas in 2016.

Cadillac’s much-anticipated entrance into Formula 1 was marked by a mix of hope and harsh reality. While the debut was touted as “incredible,” it was ultimately a stark reminder of the competitive nature of F1, with Perez finishing in 16th place after being lapped three times. His teammate, Valtteri Bottas, encountered a series of mechanical issues, retiring after just 15 laps due to a fuel system failure.

Reflecting on the rollercoaster experience, Perez remarked, “Completing the race was incredible… but it’s a shame that our battery couldn’t complete it.” This admission underscores the uphill battle Cadillac faces in catching up with more established teams. He candidly noted, “The honeymoon is over,” emphasizing that the team must now pivot from mere participation to aggressive competition.

The pressure is mounting, but Perez is optimistic about the path ahead. “We need to put a plan in the team to move along and close the gap, which I believe we can do,” he stated, encouraging a fierce competitive spirit within the team. “We are all very competitive inside the team and that’s the attitude we need to be able to close the gap and aim for something big this year.”

Bottas, despite his race retirement, adopted a more upbeat tone regarding the team’s performance. “Overall, we were there. We were racing with some cars,” he noted, highlighting that they managed to keep Aston Martin behind for a significant portion of the race, a silver lining in a tumultuous day. Bottas expressed pride in the team’s efforts and acknowledged the learning curve they must navigate. “This is part of the learning curve. We’ve just got to keep resolving issues and the only way is up from here.”

Even amid the struggles, Bottas revealed insights into the race dynamics, citing tyre graining as a major limitation before he faced larger mechanical hurdles. He candidly shared, “The first issue seemed to be something mechanical… when we swapped the wheel in the pit lane, it helped.” His experience serves as a testament to the challenges that lie ahead for the fledgling team.

As the dust settles on their debut, both Perez and Bottas are now focused on the future. With their sights set on significant improvements, the Cadillac F1 team is ready to shed the honeymoon phase and embrace the fierce reality of Formula 1 racing. The message is clear: they are here to compete, and with the right strategies and determination, they aim to turn their incredible debut into a stepping stone for greater achievements in the high-octane world of motorsport.
