Sergio Perez’s Red Bull Exit: Montoya Claims “More Upside Than Down” Amid Looming Decision

Sergio “Checo” Perez, the pride of Mexico and a tenacious force in Formula 1, is now at a crossroads in his storied career. After parting ways with Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2024 season to make way for rising star Liam Lawson, Perez has opened up for the first time about his future in motorsport.

The 34-year-old is currently without a seat for the 2025 season, a stark reminder of how unforgiving the F1 world can be. While Perez has faced career challenges before, his departure from Red Bull marks a significant shift as he reflects on his next steps away from the grid.

“I’ll Decide in Six Months”: Perez Weighs His Future

Speaking candidly, Perez revealed that he will take a six-month hiatus before making a definitive decision about his racing career.

“In the next six months, I will make a decision on what’s next for my career. I am totally happy, and I will return to Formula 1 if that is what makes me happiest,” Perez stated.

While he hasn’t ruled out a return to F1, Perez is keeping his options open, hinting at the possibility of exploring opportunities in other racing series. His father, Antonio Perez, has expressed doubts about Checo returning to the F1 grid, further fueling speculation that his time in the sport may be over.

Red Bull Exit: The Final Straw?

Perez’s departure from Red Bull was a result of a significant performance gap compared to teammate Max Verstappen. The 280-point deficit in 2024 was glaring, with Verstappen consistently outperforming Perez both in qualifying and on race days. While Perez delivered moments of brilliance, including a few podiums, Red Bull’s expectations for a championship-caliber teammate ultimately led to the decision to promote Liam Lawson.

This isn’t the first time Perez has faced such adversity. In 2020, he was forced out of Racing Point (now Aston Martin) to make way for Sebastian Vettel. Left without a seat for most of the off-season, Perez’s career seemed to be in limbo until Red Bull signed him after his stunning victory at the Sakhir Grand Prix. Reflecting on his resilience, Perez said:
“The important thing is that I never gave up. Whenever something difficult happened in my career, better things came—and that was because I never gave up.”

Checo’s Break: Family, Friends, and Reflection

For now, Perez is embracing life away from the relentless demands of Formula 1. He plans to spend time with his family and friends, enjoying a well-deserved break after the high-pressure environment of Red Bull Racing.

“I am totally happy,” he reiterated, signaling that his decision will be guided by personal fulfillment rather than external pressure.

A Possible Path Back? The 2026 Cadillac Entry

While F1 seats are notoriously hard to come by, one potential lifeline for Perez could be General Motors’ Cadillac team, set to join the grid in 2026. The American outfit will likely look for an experienced driver to guide them through their debut season, and Perez’s wealth of knowledge and marketability could make him a prime candidate.

The timeline for Perez’s career decision aligns neatly with Cadillac’s anticipated finalization of their entry plans, leaving the door open for a potential comeback.

The Legacy of Sergio Perez

Whether or not Perez returns to Formula 1, his legacy is secure. With multiple race wins, a reputation for being a tire-management maestro, and his historic triumph as the first Mexican driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix, Checo has already etched his name into the sport’s history books.

Fans will undoubtedly miss his gritty performances and unyielding determination, but Perez’s story is far from over. Whether it’s a comeback to F1 or a new chapter in another series, one thing is certain: Checo will face his next challenge with the same tenacity that has defined his career.
